2 “Reiki” (ray-key) is Japanese for ‘universal life energy’, a term used to describe a natural system to help bring about an improved sense of wellbeing and a positive feeling of spiritual renewal. This tradition was founded by Dr Mikao Usui in the early 20th century and evolved as a result of his research, experience and dedication.

It is a tradition that is open to any belief system and benefits may include deep relaxation and the promotion of a calm peaceful sense of wellbeing.

The method of receiving a Reiki treatment from a practitioner is simple. The recipient remains  clothed and comfortably lies on a couch or sits on a chair. The practitioner gently places their hands non intrusively, on or near the body using their intuition and training as a guide. There is no massage or manipulation. Reiki can be used on the person as a whole, or on specific parts of the body. It is also possible to receive Reiki at a distance.

Reiki is taught by Reiki Masters / Teachers, who have trained in the tradition passed on, in person, from Master to student. Students go through a process of initiation/attunement to the Reiki energy.  They are then able to treat themselves and others, not only from a personal and emotional  perspective, but also as an aid to individual development and spiritual growth.

REIKI TESTIMONIALS:

By Carrie: "Helen instantly made me feel at ease and explained all about the treatments, how they help and we had chance to talk about the problem area’s that I really want to work on. The Reiki treatment was very relaxing, it gave me time to switch off to the world and it felt wonderful knowing someone was thinking positive thoughts and sending positive energy my way. It’s so easy to be dragged down by daily life and begin to feel like you are there to serve your family. But after the Reiki I felt much calmer and relaxed. When I went home I felt much more in control with the children and just happier in general."

By Betty: "Thank you Helen. The Reiki treatment you gave me made me feel much better. The energy that came through your hands was amazing. I felt warm all over and I let go of all my tension. At the end of the session I felt so relaxed and it helped my aches and pains."

REIKI RESEARCH:

Thrane, & Cohen (2014). Effect of Reiki Therapy on Pain and Anxiety in Adults: An In-Depth Literature Review of Randomized Trials with Effect Size Calculations. Pain Management Nursing, 15(4), 897-908. , based on the size Cohen’s d statistics calculated in this review, there is evidence to suggest that Reiki therapy may be effective for pain and anxiety.

Research suggests that work-related stress is an influential factor in nursing burn out and retention. Reiki, an ancient form of Oriental "energy work" or healing, has been found to decrease stress. The Perceived Stress Scale tool was administered prior to the Reiki I class and after three weeks of practicing self-Reiki. Seventeen participants returned follow-up data. Results indicated that practicing Reiki more often resulted in reduced perceived stress levels. Data from this small pilot study supports educating nurses about Reiki practice to decrease work-related stress.
